The Gun

The gun has played a critical role in history. An invention that has been praised and denounced… Served both hero and villain alike… and carries with it moral responsibility. To better understand the gun is to better understand history.

Firearms Freedom Advances In Virginia!

Gun Owners of America E-Mail Alert

Great news!  Last month we alerted you to a superb pro-gun bill pending in the Virginia General Assembly.

HB 69 recently passed the House of Delegates overwhelmingly (70-29) and is now before the Senate's Courts of Justice Committee.

Introduced by Del. Charles Carrico (R-5) and known as the Virginia Firearms Freedom Act, HB 69 is modeled after similar legislation which has been successful in other states, including Montana -- the first state to pass such a law.

The Firearms Freedom Act has a simple concept.  HB 69 states that if a gun was made in Virginia, and then stays in the Commonwealth, the federal government may not regulate it under the Interstate Commerce Clause.  (Because, you see, the gun was never part of interstate commerce.)

This is important because the Commerce Clause is the "hook" that Congress has used to justify almost every single federal gun control law.  But with the passage of HB 69, the Commonwealth will take a stand that guns stamped with the words "Made in Virginia" are no business of the federal government.

Now that we've breezed through the House, we can expect anti-gun forces to try and kill this excellent measure in the Senate.  Therefore, it is imperative that we make it impossible for senators to do the bidding of the enemies of freedom.

SmartCarry - The "Invisible Holster"

Over the years I've used dozens of hostlers. Finally I'd decided that there was no one perfect holster for all situations. I always had to wear my shirt untucked or a coat to cover my gun. Besides keeping it concealed they were often uncomfortable to wear. They weighted down my clothes and if I needed to run they bounced around which gets annoying.

How would you like to be able to wear the clothing of your choice, with no restrictions, have complete freedom of your body movements, a real plus for active people, while carrying a concealed handgun in complete safety and comfort that no one can detect? Sound too good to be true? It's a fact that SmartCarry provides just that, for either male or female users (dresses and skirts)!

A few years ago I saw The SmartCarry at a gun show. We all laughed as the guy drew his gun from inside the front of his pants but we didn't stay around long enough to hear anything about it. More recently I found two friends who had bought it and were quite happy with it. After hearing what they had to say I decided to get one.

It did take a few days to get used to it but in a short while I hardly noticed I had it on. The SmartCarry holster makes a big claim: that their unique holster keeps a weapon concealed and undetectable by anyone. It really is The "Invisible Holster" (or at least it had better be!). I've baffled many as they tried to guess where my gun was hidden. Even in a standard pat-down it won't be detected. No need to keep a coat on or a shirt untucked. You could even go to the beach with just swim trunks and it would still be 100% concealed.

Worn outside the pants for demonstration
Comfortable? I hardly notice I'm wearing it anymore! I have it on 16 hours a day and have done every activity without it hindering me. I've had it on while digging, biking, playing volley ball, and even jogging. One of the best benefits of the SmartCarry is it doesn't restrict what you can wear. I wear mine with my Wrangler jeans all week and to church or dressier occasions with my slacks. No coat to cover!

What guns can you carry in it? The designer of the SmartCarry carries a full size 1911. I've carried a Glock 27 and now a Ruger SP101. Both of these work real well. If you're really active or wear tighter clothes the larger gun may be a problem.

Can it be hard to draw? Most don't believe me when I say I can draw almost as fast out of my SmartCarry as from a hip holster. It's true. See this video demonstration:

I'm now convinced this is the best concealed carry system. Best concealed. Most comfortable. Doesn't restrict the clothes you can where. Doesn't restrict the activities you're involved in. I've been wearing mine for a year now. Without this option it would be a hassle to carry in a lot of the places I go and with the active life I have. I haven't been disappointed in any way.

1949 Winchester 94 30 WCF

This weekend is the gun show in Lynden at the fair grounds. I stopped in this morning looking for one thing and found it: a good priced old Winchester .30-30. This is a pre-1964 so it has the old style action which is stronger and smoother. Even though it's 61 years old it feels like a new action. It has been re-blued but the stock is all original. It is stamped ".30 WCF" rather then the newer ".30-30".

".30 WCF" stands for .30 Winchester Center Fire. Marlin did not want to put the name of rival Winchester on their rifles when they were chambered for the cartridge soon after its introduction so the -30 was added in place of WCF. The -30 stands for the standard load of 30 grains of early smokeless powder, which was on par with IMR/DuPont's 4064. Over time Marlin's variation on the name stuck, though ".30 WCF" is also used.

“Assault Weapon” Ban Being Considered in Olympia

As you will recall, NRA-ILA has informed you about Senate Bill 6396, legislation that would bring California-style gun-control to the Northwest and ultimately ban many semi-automatic firearms commonly owned by Washingtonians.  SB6396 was heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee but no action was taken.

SB 6396 is more far-reaching than it appears on the surface and will absolutely impact a gigantic swath of Washington firearm owners, including concealed pistol license holders, hunters and competitive pistol shooters.  As examples, consider the following restrictions that flow from the provisions of this horrendous piece of gun control legislation:
  • Every semiautomatic AND PUMP-ACTION rifle or shotgun that has a detachable magazine and has a pistol grip located rear of the trigger (yes, that is just about all of them) is defined as an “assault weapon” and is banned under SB 6396!

  • If you and your child/children are out in the woods plinking with his or her Ruger 10-22 and there are more than 10 rounds in the magazine, you are a FELON!

  • If you are a Concealed Pistol License holder and your semi-auto self-defense pistol contains more than 10 rounds, you are a FELON!
  • The use of firearms defined as “assault weapons” (see first bullet point) are banned for use in hunting!

  • Competitive shooters will be impacted as any semi-auto pistol that has a detachable magazine and is equipped with a muzzle brake or compensator is defined as an “assault weapon!”

  • If you own a firearm(s) defined as an “assault weapon” on the date this bill becomes law, you can keep it if you are willing to allow your Sheriff to come into your home once every year to ensure you store your firearm(s) appropriately!

Senate Bill 6396 is proof that the gun-ban groups and politicians are not interested in only banning semi-automatic firearms that happen to look like military firearms.  This bill shows where they really want to go with their agenda!  This gun ban scheme will only punish law-abiding citizens and will do nothing to curb crime or keep criminals from obtaining firearms illegally.  This is not only another attack on our Second Amendment rights in Washington State, but an attack on your Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable searches of your home!

4x4 Drive and Shooting on Sumas Mountain New Years Day

What was originally thought to be just a shooting trip turned into a good 4x4 drive and trying not to blow off the top of Sumas Mountain. Kirk Roberts was the only one who has seen the place before so none of us knew what to expect.

Shooting my new what was a 10/22

Phil and Adam shooting their ARs

One of the few times it's nice to have a lifted truck. Phil's rig was riding a little low and slow but made it up. (he's got a lift ordered for his rig btw :)

FBI Reports Huge Decrease In Murders As Firearm, Ammunition And "Large" Magazine Sales Soar

Last week, the FBI issued its preliminary 2009 crime report, showing that the number of murders in the first half of 2009 decreased 10 percent compared to the first half of 2008. If the trend holds for the remainder of 2009, it will be the single greatest one-year decrease in the number of murders since at least 1960, the earliest year for which national data are available through the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Also, the per capita murder rate for 2009 will be 51 percent lower than the all-time high recorded in 1991, and it will be the lowest rate since 1963 - a 46-year low. Final figures for 2009 will be released by the FBI next year.

The Bible & Guns

By Larry Pratt
Executive Vice-President
Gun Owners Foundation

The underlying argument for gun control seems to be that the availability of guns causes crime. By extension, the availability of any weapon would have to be viewed as a cause of crime. What does the Bible say about such a view?

Perhaps we should start at the beginning, or at least very close to the beginning -- in Genesis 4. In this chapter we read about the first murder. Cain had offered an unacceptable sacrifice, and Cain was upset that God insisted that he do the right thing. In other words, Cain was peeved that he could not do his own thing.

Cain decided to kill his brother rather than get right with God. There were no guns available, although there may well have been a knife. Whether it was a knife or a rock, the Bible does not say. The point is, the evil in Cain's heart was the cause of the murder, not the availability of the murder weapon.

God's response was not to ban rocks or knives, or whatever, but to banish the murderer. Later (see Genesis 9:5-6) God instituted capital punishment, but said not a word about banning weapons.

Did Christ Teach Pacifism?
Self-Defense in the Old Testament
Trusting God
Role of Government
Self Defense Versus Vengeance
Self Defense in the New Testament
National Blessings and Cursings

Conclusion
The wisdom of the framers of the Constitution is consistent with the lessons of the Bible. Instruments of defense should be dispersed throughout the nation, not concentrated in the hands of the central government. In a godly country, righteousness governs each man through the Holy Spirit working within. The government has no cause to want a monopoly of force; the government that desires such a monopoly is a threat to the lives, liberty and property of its citizens.

The assumption that only danger can result from people carrying guns is used to justify the government's having a monopoly of force. The notion that the people cannot be trusted to keep and bear their own arms informs us that ours, like the time of Solomon, may be one of great riches but is also a time of peril to free people. If Christ is not our King, we shall have a dictator to rule over us, just as Samuel warned.

For those who think that God treated Israel differently from the way He will treat us today, please consider what God told the prophet Malachi: "For I am the Lord, I do not change..." (Malachi 3:6).
